Female entrepreneurs unintentionally perpetuate the gender divide in entrepreneurship by starting social ventures, emphasizing female relational stereotypes.

Why is it important?

Scholars agree that that entrepreneurship is gendered; however, many question still exist about how this divide is reinforced. This article responds to this gap by exploring how the marginalization of female entrepreneurs is recursively perpetuated. Therefore, by gaining this needed insight, we can explore future policy and actions that can be taken to lessen this divide.

Perspectives

Although the rate of female led ventures is markedly increasing, entrepreneurship is still plagued by institutional norms and stereotypes that portray entrepreneurship as a masculine activity. To move beyond this and create new norms and challenge the taken for granted assumptions, we showcase one possible cause of this perpetual marginalization of women in entrepreneurship. We discuss how future policy can begin to address this but call for future research to explore other factors that also fuel this masculine ideal of entrepreneurial activity.
