What is it about?
The article seeks to describe hot school lunches from the perspective of Finnish 9th grade students. An analysis of how pupils’ perspectives to school lunch practices are in tension with the educational aims of school lunches is presented. Results contribute to developing adolescent-centered food and health education in secondary schools.

Why is it important?
As educators and practitioners working with young people, we should remember that our perspectives might greatly differ from those of young people. Understanding food-related social determinants and justifications for food practices from pupils’ perspective are valuable pedagogical assets for teachers. Young people's criticism could be seen also as possibilities for dialogue, rather than merely behavior to be shut down or scolded upon by adults.
