What is it about?
This paper explores the gender disparities in how micro-entrepreneurs are affected by and recover from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a mixed-methods approach, which includes quantitative data from a representative study and qualitative insights from interviews with 36 self-employed individuals in Germany, the research reveals a gender gap in impact and recovery. It highlights that female entrepreneurs in caregiving roles experience these disparities, and interestingly, the study shows that these differences don't lead to more significant business recovery measures but involve more experimentation and prosocial behaviours. The research brings a unique perspective by emphasising the dual influence of economic and social factors crucial for female entrepreneurs’ recovery during the crisis.
