What is it about?

Managing healthcare waste has remain a significant challenge that poses health and environmental hazards in many developing countries of which Ghana is no exception. Although several studies on waste management in developing countries have been conducted, studies on performance measurement of waste management services are limited. Undeniably, there are challenges in public hospitals with regards to waste management processes more especially, segregation, storage, treatment and disposal. In the case of Ghana, though the policy framework is complete and serves as a standard operating procedure for healthcare waste management, there are convincing evidence that point to poor practices in waste management in public hospitals, more especially handling of medical waste. While this study supports recommendations from many other studies on training and knowledge improvement, attitudes and human resource management to improve hospital waste management, this present study adds to the existing body of knowledge more critical performance dimensions that should be considered to improve waste management services
