What is it about?

We analyzed all published paper in four career journals between 2012 and 2016, and formulated 16 most popular topics. In doing so, we describe each of these topics, provide some statistics about how often they were published in which of the four journals, and we provide suggestions for future research. We found that some of the most popular topics are quite traditional, such as managing your career success and the process of career decision making. We also found some up and coming topics, though, such as employability and meaningful work. We wrap the paper up with an overall reflection of our findings and some more general suggestions for the future of research on careers.

Why is it important?

This study is important because it reviews all 693 published papers in CDI, CDQ, JCA, and JCD between 2012-2016 and thereby reflect on the major trends in careers research. As such, it provides an overview of the most popular topics and also of some surprisingly absent topics in the list of trending topics. This overview helps scholars and practitioners to see what the key themes are and we provide ideas for what the key themes of the future might be.

Perspectives

This study was such a joy to perform. It started of as a relatively minor idea as I was going to write a brief editorial letter for CDI about trending topics in that journal. It naturally grew from there into a much bigger review of the four career journals of the past five years. Although it was a big project, it was so much fun to really dive into these trending topics and get an overview of the academic literature of the past five years. I hope this will inspire many of my fellow researchers in their own projects!
