What is it about?

With the increase in income, speedy urbanization and allied changes in the lifestyle, food consumption pattern in Bangladesh has been evolving in which, households, in general, are consuming more wheat. Our study indicates that in the future, wheat consumption will increase substantially, in contrast, total rice consumption at the national level will be declined.

Why is it important?

Bangladesh is highly successful in achieving rice food production self-sufficiency. However, our article demonstrates that Bangladesh also needs to expand wheat production to meet the growing demand for wheat. A complete relying on wheat import may not be a feasible option for Bangladesh.

Perspectives

This article is based on a large nationally representative dataset collected by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). The dietary pattern is also evolving in the other developing countries across Africa. Thus, the policy implications of the present study may be generalized for other developing countries.
