What is it about?

This paper offers an analysis of the activities involving ultrarunning race reports. Race reports are write-ups about a race that are very common among ultrarunners. They may seem straightforward enough—that they tell the story of the race—but they are involved in a surprising number of activities for ultrarunners, from training to entertainment.

Why is it important?

Ultrarunning is a hobby of growing popularity. The race report is the defining genre of this sport, but it has not yet been researched. What's more, the race report offers a great testbed for developing theories about other sorts of genres, stories, documents and information processes.

Perspectives

I am an avid ultrarunner, and so this research is important to me personally. Writing race reports is something many of us ultrarunners do without thinking, and it's always good to get a deeper insight on why we do the things we do. This paper also shows the serendipity of the research process: I didn't set out to study race reports, but they popped up as something important and overlooked in my more general study on information behavior in ultrarunning.
