What is it about?

This study examines how interest in the FIFA World Cup 2022 and participation in related pre-event programs influenced physical activity levels among residents in Qatar. The research highlights the role of structured sport initiatives, such as Qatar's National Sports Day, in promoting both current and future engagement in formal and informal physical activities. Findings show that while mere interest in the event did not directly drive physical activity, active participation in pre-event programs significantly boosted physical engagement, aligning with principles of engagement theory.

Why is it important?

This research underscores the importance of pre-event programming as a means to harness the social and health benefits of sport mega-events. By understanding how targeted initiatives can motivate physical activity, policymakers and event organizers can design strategies to improve community well-being and reduce healthcare costs. This approach contributes to the broader legacy of such events, shifting the focus from economic gains to lasting societal impacts.

Perspectives

Future research could explore how similar pre-event strategies might work in other cultural contexts or for different types of mega-events. A mixed-methods approach could provide deeper insights into the social and psychological mechanisms driving physical activity, ensuring the benefits of sport programming are inclusive and sustainable. Additionally, digital and technological tools could be leveraged to further engage diverse populations in health-promoting activities.
