What is it about?

Through description and consideration of 12 models developed as part of the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP), a new model of successful school leadership is developed. The open-systems model presented is an alternative to previous models and is better able to show the dynamics of successful school leadership.

Why is it important?

This model captures knowledge from complex case study research in a relatively depiction of how educational leadership works with context and people to influence teaching and learning, and ultimately improve student and school outcomes.

Perspectives

The paper provides description of many models that we have developed over time and brings these together in one view. It is a view of schools and school leadership that seems to resonate well with those working in schools, as well as research students and researchers in school leadership. It is not complete - no model is - and doesn't present causal pathways or details about how the elements work together. But the paper does provide access to the extensive evidence base behind the model and enables the reader to follow-up on those areas of interest.
