What is it about?

The healthy buildings movement tends to adopt a "pathogenic" approach (i.e. focusing on reducing factors which cause disease). In this literature review, we consider how the movement could also benefit from the "salutogenic" approach (i.e. focusing on factors which support higher levels of human health and wellbeing).

Why is it important?

To ensure that workplaces are truly "healthy", it is not enough to simply ensure that they do not cause disease. It is also important to consider how the workplace environment can support employees to live healthier and happier lives.

Perspectives

I hope this review paper encourages workplace practitioners to think more creatively about the concept of "wellbeing", understanding it as more than just the absence of negative symptoms.
