What is it about?
This article maps how academic research has studied digital transformation in small and medium enterprises. Using 448 Scopus-indexed documents and CiteSpace, the study identifies publication trends, influential works, leading countries, research clusters, and emerging topics. It shows that SMEs are increasingly discussed in relation to technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, data analytics, e-commerce, and the Internet of Things.

Why is it important?
Small and medium enterprises are central to economic development, but they often face financial, human-resource, and technology-readiness barriers when trying to transform digitally. This study is useful because it organizes a growing research field and helps researchers, policymakers, and business decision-makers understand where the literature has advanced and where more work is needed. The findings are based on Scopus-indexed literature, so they should be read as a map of academic production rather than as direct evidence from SME implementation cases.
Perspectives
This article has a special personal meaning for me because, at that time, I was still a young researcher learning how to enter and contribute to this field. I was guided by the example of Diana Parra, whose leadership and practical workload carried much of the process. Working with her helped me understand not only the technical side of scientometric analysis, but also the discipline, persistence, and clarity required to build a publishable literature-based study. In the end, I learned a great deal from this project and from the broader topic of digital transformation in SMEs.
