What is it about?

Cocrystal formation can improve drug performace, for example its water solubility. We tried to understand why certain cocrystals are favoured and what is governing their formation. We have shown that in the case of apremilast, an anti-psoriatic drug this formation is govern by entropy.

Why is it important?

Understanding why and how cocrystals are formed will hopefully help us to design new, improved forms of drugs with poor bioavailability.

Perspectives

I am really happy to be able to work in the field of crystal engineering, as this might be the way in which we will be able to solve in the future the problem of drugs, which have good biological activity, but poor bioavailability. Understanding why certain cocrystals are formed, while others are not is a part of a great effort to develop this field.
