What is it about?
This paper summarize different cases of of formation salts and co-crystals of amino acids with maleic acid. In all these cases formation of C22(12) crystallographic motif was found. Here we explain why it forms and calculate energies of all intermolecular interactions in the crystal of L-valinium hydrogen maleate

Why is it important?
Topic is interesting due to formation of different salts and co-crystals from initial compounds with very different solubility. This is not common for salts and co-crystals of small organic molecules. Finally the question of why maleic acid, but not other always favour mixed crystals and one motif is always forms. The question of thermodynamics and kinetics controll is rised and answered
