What is it about?
This paper investigates how the tissue properties in bone vary locally within bone tissue and show that there is strong spatial heterogeneity of the mineral properties, in particular in zones where different organization motives are merging and create cement lines at their interface.

Why is it important?
The varying mineral properties point towards a fine-grained control during the bone formation process. This also implies that these properties could be a way to tune the mechanical or physiological behavior of the tissue.
