What is it about?

We describe the first non protein nucleating agents made specifically for robotic high throughput crystallization experiments. These agents (MIPs; known as ‘smart materials’) are created to contain nano cavities similar to the size of protein molecules and to prompt crystal growth when introduced into trials. MIPS have been shown to be effective for both screening (greater number and variety of hits) and optimization (better crystals in MIP presence).

Why is it important?

The research has paved the way to commercialization resulting in a patented product called 'Chayen Reddy MIP' that can be used for the automated screening and optimization of any biomacromolecule. The application of these materials is simple, quick and 20 nanolitres is sufficient for each trial. The product is cost-effective and provides a potent tool for scientists in academia and industry endevouring to increase their success.
