What is it about?

Hollow crystals can play crucial roles in containing, molding, channeling, and surface reactions. We have shown that surface properties of single crystal substrates such as α-quartz and sapphire enabled microstructural controls for hollow crystals. Four different types of hollow rod crystals were successfully generated on these substrates due to their different hydrophilic surfaces.

Why is it important?

We classified hollow rod crystals based on size and shape of their cross sections and by the presence or absence of branching structures. This is important in crystal engineering, to elucidate the connections between such hollow shapes and the surface properties of substrates such as wettabilities.

Perspectives

I hope this article will attract the attentions of organic chemists relying on synthesis to find the novel structures and functions for organic materials. Combinations of crystal engineering and synthetic chemistry definitely lead to the promising design for functional materials.
