What is it about?
The OÆSE endstation at BESSY II is a new user-accessible infrastructure designed for operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy of energy materials. The infrastructure enables real-time investigations of catalysts and batteries under operating conditions, providing insights into key (electro)chemical mechanisms that can limit performance and hinder industrial application.

Why is it important?
Understanding how materials for batteries, catalysis, or solar cells behave during operation is crucial to improving their performance. Specially, the OÆSE infrastructure offers modular sample environments designed to replicate the conditions occurring in real-world applications and specifically tailored for each energy material.
Perspectives
With dedicated setups for electrocatalysis and batteries—and more in development—OÆSE will continue evolving with the needs of the community. Its flexibility and user accessibility make it a key tool for advancing operando research on functional energy materials.
