What is it about?
This work is dedicated to the energy decomposition analysis of viscous free-surface flows. In the presence of a free surface, the viscous dissipation for a Newtonian liquid can be decomposed into two terms: an enstrophy component and a free-surface deformation component. The latter requires the evaluation of volume and surface integrals which can be not trivial to evaluate numerically when considering a complex air-water interface.

Why is it important?
Viscous dissipation of complex free-surface flow is hard to predict numerically and theoretical laws are available only for restrict conditions which cannot be extended to the wide range of engineering applications. This article present an attempt for a novel discussion on the topic.
