What is it about?

John Nelder FRS, 1924-2010, was a leading statistician who made important and influential contributions to statistical modelling. This is both a tribute and an account of his life in statistics and beyond. Among his important contributions were the theory of general balance in designed experiments, generalised linear models (with Robert Wedderburn and later Peter McCullagh) and hierarchical generalised linear models (with Youngjo Lee and later Yudi Pawitan).

Why is it important?

This is the most complete account of the life and work of a leading statistician in the second half of the 20th century.

Perspectives

I lived in Harpenden 1995-2003 and during this period frequently travelled with John to London. We became friends as a result and it was an honour to be able to write his scientific biography.
