What is it about?

Honey bees are sometimes added to insect pollinated crops to boost pollination or for honey production. We have examined what happens with the wild insects in the crop when honey bees are added. The densities of wild insects decreased in fields with added honey bees, compared to fields without honey bees.

Why is it important?

Even if mass-flowering crops are considered to be important food resources for many pollen- and nectar feeding insects, competition experiments in crops are rare, especially studies on landscape level. It is important knowledge, since it can affect both crop pollination and the conservation of wild insects.
