What is it about?
Breast implants are foreign material that place the patient at a higher rate of infection. A trend in increase of Mycobacterial infections, a special type of bacteria, is noted in patients travelling to developing countries for cosmetic procedures. These infections are difficult to diagnose and challenging to manage. We looked at the published medical literature to study the characteristics of these infections, the kind of treatment that was used and the best way to manage them. This study will help increase awareness among plastic surgeons and the community of these infections, their rising trends with cosmetic travel and their management.
