What is it about?

The medical literature has been filled with data about severe head injuries in children with thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) but those who have mild head injury are not reported. This observation is published to show that minor head injuries are not uncommon even in children with thrombocytopenia from a variety of causes. Not surprisingly, the outcome is favourable.

Why is it important?

Parents and even doctors are overwhelmed by the published medical literature with serious consequences in children with thrombocytopenia and intracranial bleeding. This is probably a very biased perspective. More data on the domestic scene are needed so that clinicians have a more balanced view on the management of thrombocytopenia and head injury.

Perspectives

Simple head injuries in children are common. They are probably benign even in those with low platelet counts.
