What is it about?

We show how tear lactoferrin levels is affected by blockage of eyelid margin oil glands called meibomian glands.

Why is it important?

Dry eye and allergies are very common condition. Lactoferrin is a known biomarker that is reduced in dry eye, however how it is affected in eyelid disease and ocular allergies is still unknown.

Perspectives

Meibomian gland dysfunction, but not atrophy, was associated with lower tear lactoferrin concentration, greater dry eye, and allergic symptoms, indicating greater inflammation and discomfort in patients with lower meibomian gland expressibility.
