Why is it important?

The incidence of abnormal cytological findings was 21.0%, whereas low-grade anal intraepithelial was confirmed in 0.5% of the patients. There is a higher incidence of cytological abnormalities among immunosuppressed women and smokers.

Perspectives

There is an urgent need for the scientific community to commit to well-designed prospective studies to understand the real situation of anal dysplasia in high-risk patients and the role that screening programs could have in preventing anal carcinoma in this population.
