What is it about?

This review introduces diagnostic techniques for ocular infections, ranging from classical culture and smear examination to state-of-the-art methods using next-generation sequencing technology, and describes the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Why is it important?

Diagnosis using only the most advanced sequencing technology is highly sensitive and therefore carries the risk of misdiagnosis. It is important to make a comprehensive judgment, including the results of classical diagnostic methods such as culture and smear specimen.

Perspectives

In the future, metagenome analysis using next-generation sequencing technology will be applied to the field of ocular infectious diseases. At the same time, we believe that the importance of classical diagnostic methods should be reevaluated.
