What is it about?
This article describes a technique for ultrasound imaging to guide the insertion of an intravenous catheter into a vein. The images show the ultrasound appearance of the tip and bevel of a needle.

Why is it important?
Intravenous access can be difficult at times, and may require multiple attempts that can cause pain and suffering to the patient. Ultrasound imaging can be used to mncrease the success rate of intravenous line placement, but the technique is difficult to master.
Perspectives
I use this technique all the time while caring for children undergoing surgery. It is highly effective and well tolerated for patients who are awake or asleep. One of my biggest fears is to take care of a baby without any IV access during an emergency. The ultrasound guided technique has been instrumental in mitigating this risk and saved many patients under my care.
