What is it about?
Our aim was to identify features that could serve as indicators of metabolic health. We used a mixed meal and a weight loss intervention with energy restriction to identify those metabolic features. In this study, we classified volunteers originally considered healthy into 2 groups according to their lipid metabolism measured in the hours following a standardised meal. The classification revealed that one of the groups was less healthy than the other, with characteristic signs of metabolic disorder. On top of that, we analysed the urine of the volunteers and found that most of the volunteers in the less healthy group had an unhealthy diet. Finally, when all volunteers participate in a weight-loss intervention, only the ones from the less healthy group profited from it, showing signs of improved metabolic health. This study reveals the high variability among individual responses to a challenge such as the intake of a meal and the importance of this analysis to predict the outcome of a dietary intervention and to diagnose metabolic diseases.
