What is it about?

In the context of increasingly growing numbers of older workers across the world, the emerging concept of successful aging at work offers a suitable framework for analyzing the drivers of and the processes underlying workers’ longer and sustainable careers. The purpose of this article is to extend existing knowledge of the factors and processes underlying successful aging at work by exploring various pathways through which people in late career experience their workplace and perform their work.

Why is it important?

We develop and test a model of successful aging at work in two consecutive studies. The results demonstrate the importance of both Human Resource practices and individual strategies (proactive work behaviors) in fostering successful aging at work. Key in this process are workers’ psychological experiences of thriving at work (i.e., energy and learning). Based on our findings, we provide recommendations for workers, employers, and academic researchers.
