What is it about?

Natural radioactivity measurement in foodstuff is very important. In this study, we assessed the level of natural radionuclide contents in maize as a stable foodcrop in Nigeria. The associated radiological health hazard indices were estimated and compared with the international recommended safe limits.

Why is it important?

So as to know the radiation level people expose to and the possible health implications due to the consumption of the maize.

Perspectives

It is an important study since in the country, different agricultural practices are employed in growing crops which may impacts on the radioactivity level and inadvertently affect the lives of the people who consume these foodcrops. The particular maize considered in the study had not been studied before, the study sets baseline data of the radioactivity in the maize grown in Jigawa state, Nigeria.
