What is it about?

This paper explores the definition and components of CPTED from the perspective of users (in this case Designing out Crime Officers) and abusers (burglars). It calls for a revision of the principles and consideration for a weighting based upon the impact on crime.

Why is it important?

What is CPTED and who defined the principles upon which it is based? This paper presents the findings from in-depth interviews with a sample of ten incarcerated, adult, male burglars and ten Designing out Crime Officers (DOCOs), in England and Wales. It proposes a redefinition of CPTED that accounts for user and abuser perspectives.

Perspectives

This is a really interesting paper that compares the interpretation of CPTED from the perspective of Designing out Crime Officers (those tasked with implementing CPTED) and incarcerated burglars (those ultimately challenging its effectiveness).
