What is it about?

Diplomatic engagement with people rather than other governments is now receiving more attention by scholars than any other aspect of diplomacy. I see it as part of the evolution of diplomacy as a whole. Besides states, there are now many other players on the diplomatic scene, and public diplomacy as a practice has also attracted a lot of attention outside the West.

Why is it important?

This concept of public diplomacy underlines how the conduct of international relations is constantly changing. Society and the individual feature in diplomacy as never before.

Perspectives

I wrote this textbook article virtually parallel to a chapter on public diplomacy for the Oxford University Press Handbook of Diplomacy (Cooper, Heine, Thakur eds) - a challenging experience for an author. The two are meant to be complementary. I hope the reader will agree!
