What is it about?
The S. pombe Rad8 gene encodes a large protein, that has subsequently been demonstrated to be a ubiquitin E3 ligase. One of it key roles is in poly-ubiquitination of PCNA (reviewed in Watts, DNA Repair 2006)

Why is it important?
Ubiquitination of PCNA has roles in post-replication repair: i.e. in assisting cells to either bypass DNA damage during DNA replication by recruiting a translesion synthesis polymerase, or for template switching, whereby replication continues using an undamaged strand as a template for replication.
