What is it about?

S. pombe rad4 is an essential gene required for response to DNA damage. It has a number of roles, including in DNA replication, for which it is essential, and activation of the DNA damage checkpoint.

Why is it important?

This is the S. pombe homologue of humanTopBP1, that has key roles in DNA replication and the G1 and S phase checkpoints

Perspectives

BRCT domains are so named because they are present in the C-terminus of the BRCA1 protein (mutations in which are responsible for a high proportion of breast and ovarian cancers). However, this paper is in fact the first identification of BRCT domains.
