What is it about?

We used a technique capable of separating chemical compounds as per their mass proportionality to charges to unravel the concentrations of Emtricitabine, Tenofovir and Efavirenz drugs in the human plasma.

Why is it important?

We developed an analytical method for quantification of drugs and established the importance of understanding the roles of additives. One significant findings is that, Emtricitabine sodiate when in contact with solution with sodium. This makes fragmentation of the drugs to be not easy, hence may not be used as would have been thought by the body.

Perspectives

The observation of the strong sodiation that immediately attach to the Emtricitabine upon coming in contact with solution was of main interest. The sodiation was not able to break free from the drugs even at high energy, implying because the body has a lot of sodiated solution from the saliva or even water we use to take the drug, it immediately attaches to the sodium and may not break-free from the attachment. Therefore the body world not be able to use it as it was expected. Actually only 5% of the drug was measured available for use by the body whereas 95% was sodiated.
