This article looks at how Australian government decision makers assess asylum seekers' credibility when they apply for a refugee visa. It examines both the official guidelines that guide these assessments, as well as closely examining two published decisions.

Why is it important?

The article is important in that it demonstrates how difficult it is for asylum seekers to defend their credibility. It shows how institutional understandings of diversity might actually make it more difficult for asylum seekers to communicate their experiences in credible ways, rather than making it easier for them (as the guidelines suggest).
