What is it about?

Charismatic leadership makes sense of who ‘we’ are and where we are going We discuss why charismatic leadership is important in foreign policy analysis; what it is; and how and why sense-making matters for a charismatic leadership style. We contribute with new empirical knowledge by probing our theoretical propositions in a comparative case-study of the charismatic leadership practices of Donald Trump and Angela Merkel.

Why is it important?

We show how charismatic leadership matters in foreign policy and how it is used by very different leaders like Donald Trump and Angela Merkel. By focusing on migration as a foreign policy issue, we show how migration links foreign and domestic politics.

Perspectives

Our take on charismatic leadership is important for understanding how politicians communicate and why some unlikely candidates, like Donald Trump, are so succesful in creating strong followership.
