What is it about?

The aim of the review is to be a guide of commercial movies related to the field of microbiology that can be used by educators in high school, university or in science popularization events. Commercial movies are better known by the general public than documentaries.

Why is it important?

The first part is about famous diseases that appears in movies. There are more than 200 infectious diseases, but less than 30 has been depicted in movies.Tuberculosis, plague or HIV are in the "Hall of Fame" if we consider the number of films in which they have appeared. The second part is about the portrait of the scientists that fight those diseases and its evolution as movie characters. In the beginning, they were solitary heroes like Pasteur, Koch or Ehrlich. But now they are multidisciplinary groups (e.g. the movie Contagion) And the third part is about the microbial dystopias caused by bio-weapons, laboratory leak events or viral zombies outbreaks. A lot of epidemiological stuff can be taught using those movies.

Perspectives

I defined myself like a moviegoer and I am a microbiologist, so I combined my two passions in this review
