Why is it important?
This is to the author's knowledge the first paper to describe binding sites at the atomic level by means of novel algorithms to align multiple 3D protein structures. This work is under continual development and another paper developing its ideas has been published by BMC Bioinformatics: Automatic generation of 3D motifs for classification of protein binding sites, J.-C. Nebel, P. Herzyk and D. R. Gilbert, BMC Bioinformatics, 8:32, 2007
