What is it about?

We studied how underfeeding rats over 7 days and refeeding rats over 5 days using a liquid high protein diet (Osmolite) affected the function of muscle in slow and fast twitch muscles

Why is it important?

The research demonstrates first, how undernutrition causes muscle fatigue and how a return to normal muscle occurs faster than the normalization of muscle and body weight.

Perspectives

This research, out of the Jeejeebhoy lab at the University of Toronto, demonstrates that body composition is not the most reliable index of recovery but rather muscle function is as shown by the ambulation of patients after surgery or trauma. Indeed, many have shown a normalization of function in recovering patients much before the return of body composition indexes such as total body weight, muscle cross-sectional area, muscle weight and body potassium
