What is it about?
There is a remarkable collection of late medieval accounts surviving from the monastery that was attached to Durham Cathedral before the dissolution of the monasteries. This book uses the information in those accounts to shed light on the standard of living of the monks, and also on the economy and society of late medieval North East England.

Why is it important?
There are not many medieval household accounts in existence, and those that do survive have often only a single example. Because a series of accounts exist here, it is possible to see: - how medieval accounts worked, and how the different offices of the Priory related to each other - who was supplying the monastery - how responsive to prices etc they were for different commodities
