What is it about?

This is a review article highlighting the benefits of using SARS-CoV-2 pseudotype viruses in lieu of the wildtype viruses in order to facilitate safe, rapid and sensitive screening of functional protective neutralising antibody responses after natural infection or vaccination.

Why is it important?

It is important to raise awareness of this technology as ultimately many more stakeholders will be able to undertake serology for SARS-CoV-2 during a period of massive vaccine roll-out. It is relatively straight-forward to construct pseudotypes that represent the current variants of concern, which can then inform public health agencies of the levels of protection afforded by different vaccines against such variants.

Perspectives

I was honoured to receive the invite from Professor Danny Altman (Imperial College London) to write this article which was done in full cooperation with my two PDRA staff, Diego Cantoni and Martin Mayora-Neto. This is a rapidly moving field and it enabled us as a team to take stock of where global SARS-CoV-2 pseudotype research was heading.
