What is it about?

It is a letter suggesting that educational intervention for food safety practices needs to be tailored to the target populations considering common and traditional practices. Sometime the typical dishes of certain regions are actually risky. In the case of toxoplasmosis for example a lot of traditional dishes in many countries in the world are based on raw meat and vegetables.

Why is it important?

Toxoplasmosis is an example of foodborne-infection related to risky habits in raw food consumption. Raw meat and vegetables are the base for many traditional dishes in different countries so educational campaign to reduce the risk quite often are less effective in changing traditional and common practices.

Perspectives

The input for this letter came after administration of questionnaire to general population and it was very interesting to hear how the highly diffused practices related to traditional food are never considered dangerous by the consumers . Educational campaigns need to be started from the cultural background of the target population
