What is it about?

Using computer simulations we investigate the fundamental applicability of (cold-)plasma actuators for the control of laminar flow near walls in order to enhance the efficiency of flow devices. Here we focus on so-called three-dimensional boundary-layer flow that is present on swept-back airliner wings or in any flow with a wall-parallel pressure gradient that is not aligned with the oncoming flow.

Why is it important?

The results open the possibility for new methods in Laminar Flow Control with crossflow instability, i.e. to decrease the friction drag of swept aerodynamic surfaces and thus to increase the efficiency of aerodynamic devices, especially for aircraft and wind turbines.

Perspectives

We show that the body force of a plasma actuator can beneficially influence 3-d boundary-layer flow in principle.
