What is it about?

Silver ions are widely used to inhibit or kill bacteria, viruses, algae, and fungi because of their advantages such as broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, antibacterial durability, antibacterial efficiency, and do not lead to microbial resistance We explored the antibacterial properties of silver particles in nanoparticle-scale created by loading tiny silver particles onto activated carbon.

Why is it important?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of nitric acid treatment of activated carbon, and observe whether it can increase the amount of silver adsorption. We used vacuum condition to investigate if we could synthesize higher loading silver nanoparticles. Furthermore, we explored a zero-waste manufacture process and tested its antibacterial activity.

Perspectives

Although our method created excellent sterilization effects we do need to study further to reduce the silver content yet preserving the antibacterial properties we observed. We also need to study how the persistency of the nano-silver particles we loaded on activated carbon can be improved.
