Belief of tree of life or sacred tree is of great important in various ancient belief systems. This paper deals with the archaeological evidence of sacred tree ritual in the in the Urartian Culture.

Why is it important?

The archaeological excavations at the Urartian Fortress in Ayanis Village attested that a corridor shaped, elaborately ornamented room housed a ritual related to sacred tree. We have now, for the first time, archaeological evidence of what, actually, an Urartian sacred tree is all about: a wooden stick resembling a tree and its branches with almond shaped black and white stones.
