What is it about?
Encapsulation of some fractions of the coarse RCA with a layer of cement paste could provide a simpler and cost effective solution. It has been successfully applied to lightweight concrete made with porous lightweight aggregates. This paper presents the results of an investigation on the cement treatment of the 4-8 mm fraction of the RCA, with the aim of impacting the physical and mechanical properties of structural concrete made entirely with recycled aggregates.

Why is it important?
Aggregates represent around 80% of the weight of concrete, thus the production of concrete demands the availability of abundant sources for aggregates. Several quarries of aggregates are exhausted, and some countries have started to tax the use of virgin aggregates. Meanwhile Construction and Demolition Waste (C&D) availability is growing as the population in urban centers increases.
