What is it about?

Oxygen is normally titrated by the nursing staff manually with intervals dependent on the severity of the patient's condition. O2matic titrates oxygen every second based on a continuous measurement of the oxygen content in the blood, which can be done non-invasively. We know that manual titration only secures the right amount of oxygen in the blood in less than 50 % of the time. With automatic titration, performed by the device O2matic, we achieved the exactly right amount of oxygen in 83 % of the time, and an oxygen level in an acceptable target interval in 94 % of the time.

Why is it important?

This is the first time automatic oxygen titration has been used for patients with COVID-19, who are very unstable in their need of oxygen supplementation. O2matic proved very effective in securing a stable level of oxygenation in the blood. Furthermore, manual titration is time consuming, especially for patients isolated due to an infectious disease such as COVID-19, and automatic titration could reduce time used for this task.

Perspectives

Automatic oxygen titration brings oxygen treatment into the digital age. It is used increasingly in patients hospitalized with a need of oxygen supplementation, because it is far more safe and efficient than manual titration, and has the potential for saving time for the nursing staff, optimize weaning from oxygen supplementation, and speed up recovery and discharge from hospital. Next step will be to bring this automation into the patient's home for people with permanent need of oxygen supplementation.
