What is it about?
Heaviness is an essential criterion within the metal music community and is often referred to in research without definition. This article discusses the technological, performative and musical components of heaviness and how they interact to produce heaviness.

Why is it important?
To date, there is no solid theoretical and empirically validated concept of heaviness, how it is made up, and how it is achieved. This article synthesises the different perspectives and outlines a framework based on the authors' experiences as practitioners. The findings equally provide a robust foundation for future research and offer practitioners valuable knowledge that can be applied in metal music production.
