What is it about?

A persimmon extract was prepared, which was found to be rich in polyphenols, carotenoids and vitamins, all of which are powerful antioxidants. We have shown for the first time that Persimmon extract reduces the oxidative burst of neutrophiles, which is an important indicator of Persimmon's anti-inflammatory power. This was then further proved in an in vivo model of rheumatoid arthritis.

Why is it important?

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease with no known cure or etiology which has expensive treatments with less than ideal results. Therefore, treatments with less side-effects and better and greater results, based on natural products, are desirable. Our work demonstrates the nutraceutical potential (or even a coadjuvant for the traditional treatment) of this extract as an anti-inflammatory agent to reduce the impact of rheumatoid arthritis.

Perspectives

It is heart-wrenching to witness how limiting rheumatoid arthritis is for patients who suffer from it, how much pain they suffer in their daily lives, not to mention its progressive nature which impacts other organs which leads to other related pathologies. To research an extract, a natural extract, which was found to have high potential in ameliorating the effects of this condition, working side by side with a dedicated team of scientific and academic professionals, was stimulating, not to mention this finding could potentially lower the social and economic costs on our healthcare system if appropriately applied.
