What is it about?

Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder that affects over 100,000 Americans. Many people with sickle cell disease end up in the hospital, which can be costly and cause distress in their lives. We wanted to examine some risk factors that might cause people with sickle cell disease to have to come into the hospital or come back into the hospital after they are sent home.

Why is it important?

Our findings show some important factors that can cause more hospitalizations such as missing appointments, having more signs of depression, difficulty paying bills, and being more spiritual. These are all potentially modifiable risk factors that if addressed could decrease the number of times people with sickle cell disease come into the hospital.
